Uses: Used as an anticonvulsant and antiepileptic drug.
Pharmacological effects: The main mechanism of action of topiramate is to block the spread of seizures instead of preventing the occurrence of seizures. It has been found that TPM exerts anti-epileptic effects through a variety of mechanisms, including:
1. Block the voltage-dependent sodium channel to reduce the duration of epileptic discharge and the number of chemicalbook positions generated by each discharge.
2. Antagonize kainic acid/AMPA-glutamate receptor.
3. Enhance GABA activity at non-benzodiazepine sites of GABA receptors.
4. Slightly inhibit carbonic anhydrase.
